Other music to scratch the King Gizzard itch

honestly this is like best youtube recommend ive ever had, wish new album sounded like this

Anyone familiar with Motorpsycho? Musically they are different, but they are another band that’s played a bunch of different styles really well. There are some commonalities with their music (progressive rock/metal, psychedelic). They’re also crazy prolific like Gizz, but have been around since the early 90s.

The Flaming Lips > King Gizzard pipeline deepens.

Happy Halloween!!

Been meaning to check these guys out, Nick, frontman for Elder, is rocking their shirt in the video linked here:

so I assume they’re good but I’ve never gotten around to checking them out. Other than this song any recs for a good starting point?

This one pretty much goes without saying but for the sake of completion Tame Impala and its related projects should be in here.
Anyone who reads this probably knows who Tame Impala is, if not they were a huge influence on King Gizz and you should watch this:

Tame Impala is usually cited as the solo project of Kevin Parker. He does do all the work for like 99% of their studio material, but strictly speaking there are other members. Jay Watson is one of them, and along with another Tame associate Nick Allbrook has this band Pond:

Jay also has a solo project called GUM, going full circle he collaborated with Ambrose:

So really Tame Impala is just the focus of this whole WA wormhole a bit like King Gizz. One of the lesser known projects is Mink Mussel Creek which are cool:

They even jam a bit, like with this short-lived band Space Lime Peacock:

Stu recently shouted this (no embed) out in an interview:

Erkin Koray was a Turkish 70’s Electronica/Prog/Psych rock artist and this album is totally rad if you’re looking for more of the stuff that inspired the microtonal albums. Real original Altın GĂŒn vibes.

Thanks for naming Erkin Koray. I heard Stu mention the name during an interview at the Slovakia Grape Fest gig, but I didn’t catch it clearly enough to find the musician.

Another one you probably already know, but Unknown Mortal Orchestra is a great neo-psych band who rose up at a similar time and space to King Gizz.
While originally from New Zealand, they moved to Oregon and anonymously posted their first song on Bandcamp:

And immediately got recognised, soon after they played Meredith 2011, also King Gizz’s first proper festival booking.
From there it has been a string of successful albums in their own little variety of styles:

Most recently a bit more toned back:

Well worth driving into.

Stumbled upon this the other day. Pretty cool, pretty chill.

Psychedelic Porn Crumpets are a pretty essential heavy aussie psych band if you like that higher/party energy like in Nonagon Infinity:

Frankie and The Witch Fingers are really having their moment in the heavy psych realm:

Well deserved as their newest album Data Doom is sick, bit of funk influence too.

Interesting, what about this makes you think of King Gizzard?
The album this song comes from and Forced Witness are wild, was really into those for a while but his last couple didn’t do as much for me.

Neu! are so underrated. This song directly influenced David Bowie’s “Heroes”, just to get an idea of Neu!'s influence back in the days.

The Dear Hunter are pretty good. Their albums “Act I: The Lake South, the River North” to “Act V: Hymns with the Devil in Confessional” are a continuing story with Act VI still to be released. Much like King Gizz they built their own universe.

It’s basically progressive rock, however they do quite some different styles. Their current album “Antimai” is the first part of the scifi/fantasy-themed “Indigo Child” saga.

So when this came out Stu gave an interview where he made a playlist of 10 psych tracks:

Most of the stream links are dead, so I re-created it as a Youtube playlist here:

Unfortunately the last track isn’t available at all so its missing. But you can find the artist on Bandcamp and Unearthed.
