Zappa & the Mothers

Been making my way through the new Bongo Fury box set. Some real good highlights. The long Carolina Hard-Core Ecstasy stands out for uncovering more of one of Zappa’s best solos. Don’t think I can return to the original after this.

Velvet Sunrise and Portuguese Lunar Landing making it in is also very cool. We’ve never had an official release of these until now.

Born To Suck hasn’t been heard at all if I’m not mistaken. The Mammy Anthem would later be called Born To Suck but that was completely different. The vocal session is also worth checking out just to hear everyone making jokes the entire time.

Got a copy of Waka/Jawaka the other day. Not my favorite from the Hot Rats trilogy but it’s pretty good. Should listen to it more.

This Bongo Fury set is so awesome, loving these two full live shows today!

Completely forgot about this one but I shouldn’t have.

AMAZING track. Fascinating compositional technique behind this one as well:

This one seems appropriate.

Just had this come up in my YouTube feed. Looks like a new Zappa release called Zappa ‘66 Vol. 1: Live At TTG Studios is coming May 15th! Here’s a full track list on Apple Music.

New 60’s live series? Hell yeah!

Listening to Apostrophe tonight for the first time in awhile. The first Zappa I ever heard and still a favorite. Side A is bringing on goosebumps!

That side got me into Zappa. Love how the suite just keeps building. St. Alphonzo > Father Oblivion is electric!

Found a Varese album at a thrift store a few days ago and finally spinning it. I had completely forgotten how directly apparent the influence on FZ was. Blowing my little mind all over again.

I honestly didn’t know how many different variations of Village of the Sun existed until I was compiling my arrangement doc. I like all of them but this George Duke-led one is really good.

Been listening to this early Rollo a lot lately.

Spinning Roxy & Elsewhere today. This might be my favorite Zappa album, certainly my favorite “live” Zappa (quotes = overdubs). It has it all: classic songs, fun banter/audience participation, wicked solos, tight execution, killer band.

Roxy was such a revelation when I first heard it. Then, along with the restbof the fanbase, spent decades being teased with the idea of the film. At this point I think I would go to the complete Roxy shows over the album, even though the album is not all taken from the Roxy.

The seque from Son of OC to More Trouble kills me every single time. Thankfully that is all covered on the Erie set, which is glorious as well.

This Hammersmith show is fantastic but this Dinah-Moe Humm stands out as the best ever? Audience participation falls apart completely at the end. Super funny.

Happy Mothers Day!
