Lumpy Gravy was released today in 1968! Well the non-recalled version technically, it’s complicated. I had it on earlier and didn’t even realize the anniversary was today. Don’t listen to it much but I should probably change that.
Zappa ‘66 Vol. 1: Live at TTG Studios is out now! Have not listened to all of this yet but what I’ve heard has been pretty interesting. Not a usual Mothers show, that’s for sure. “I Could Be A Slave” was on an old bootleg called Tis the Season To Be Jelly which Zappa officially released in the ‘80s as part of Beat the Boots, everything else is new to my knowledge.
Sad to hear that Ike Willis passed. Fantastic musician and vital member of Zappa’s bands from the late ‘70s to the final tour. Here’s some of my Ike-led favorites.

Oh no! RIP Ike. I’ll never forget seeing him in a very small club with Project/Object in the early 00s (may have even been ‘99). Ike crushed it that night. The man with what Zappa called a “bionic baritone” and far and away my favorite singer to ever take the stage alongside FZ.

The world was introduced to The Mothers of Invention sixty years ago today with Freak Out!
Amazes me that they were able to release such a subversive album as their debut, and on top of it have it released as a double album with a gatefold and additional poster. All for a band that was kind of unintentionally signed. Unbelievable!
It is amazing that it was released as is, but Tom Wilson was a powerhouse who essentially could do no wrong at the time, so the label trusted him. We owe Tom Wilson a great debt of gratitude for all of the mind blowing music he helped usher into the world.

A sixtieth anniversary Freak Out! set is coming in September! 2026 remaster, 1966 pre-master, 1966 mono mix, and then three Fillmore shows also from 1966. The only thing we’ve gotten from the live shows included here is The Downtown Talent Scout (from You Can’t Do That On Stage Anymore Vol. 5).

Finished the box this morning, lots of great stuff! I definitely prefer the later Zappa but the live shows in this set are really cool!
I hope the alternate edit of Black Napkins from Night of the Iron Sausage has the rest of Frank’s solo, he edited out some real filthy stuff.

I’m excited for this new set and I’m not really a big fan of Zoot Allures! Seems like a great collection of tracks. Night of the Iron Sausage is a dream release.

I love 2/3 of ZA and like the rest just fine. It was an automatic buy for me, as all of these sets are, for the Iron Sausage assemblage and the live stuff. Although I never need to hear Stinkfoot, Poodle Lecture and Dirty Love ever again.
Looking forward to more 60th anniversary sets since my primary interest wanes after ‘78 or so. Although I do get the occasional hankering for the ‘88 band.
Zoot Allures is 50 today!
