Managed to catch Dirty Three for the last show of their tour on the weekend, a rare opportunity! Very special performance, unlike anything else you are likely to hear. I occasionally listen to their studio recordings, but this really makes a whole lot more sense happening in front of you. Its very alchemical, sounds pretentious but it ranges between Noise Rock, Jazz Fusion, and traditional Folk, broken up by Warren’s wails or ad-libbed diatribes that can last up to 10 minutes.
He is a Gizz supporter too which is cool.
Sounds like an awesome time. Love their tunes.
Made it to Leah Senior last night. Unfortunately we missed about half of the set due to standstill traffic about twenty minutes into the trip. We watched as hospital helicopters landed on the road ahead to evacuate crash victims. Really scary.
The show was at a church, which gave Leah a chance to play some piano on a few tunes. That was special. Chatted with her and Jesse after the performance and they’re such lovely approachable people. I hope she tours the US again soon.
My wife, kids, and I saw Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, Robert Plant & Alison Krauss tonight. I’ve seen Bob Dylan a lot of times and my wife has seen him a good handful, but it was the first time for my kids. That was special to me that I got to take them to see a person who has meant so much throughout my life.
I taped it too:
Would recommend Indian Love Song and I Remember A Time Once When You Used To Love Me.
Wow thats a weird contrast heading into a show like that. I’ve seen her in a hall twice now including an old Church, it suits them very well.
This is great! My buddy (who I think you met briefly last summer at Star Lake) was also there with his fam. How was Willie? Can’t believe he’s 91.
Just grabbed a GA standing floor ticket for Rolling Stones tonight for under $180. Its like the back third of Levis field, but still awesome to get a floor ticket so cheap. Never saw them live and figued its probably now or never.
Recently caught Inter Arma - love the band and the new album is pretty good, but they played the whole thing from front to back and nothing else, which I feel is always a bit disappointing for a live performance. Might as well have just listened to it at home!
Vampire Weekend Red Rocks was fun but also a little weird to me. Their newest incarnation is almost like a rehearsed jam band. They sounded great but couldn’t shake the rehearsed feeling and didn’t love the backing tracks.
How good was Adrienne Lenker!?? Blew me away. Third time seeing her but first as a solo show. Gonna try to make it up to DC or Philly in November to catch another show because that Mission Ballroom one was so special.
It was absolutely incredible. Her songwriting really is something genuinely special.
so far this year:
sqwerve
too many zooz
billy strings
donny benet
widespread panic
glass beams
ajr
rolling stones
drive by truckers
i think that’s all.
on deck this year:
all gizz at RR
gizz in fayetteville
reo fucking speedwagon (first)
seeing geese in September, also possibly fontaines d.c., and then the boys themselves in november. then in may i’ll see godspeed you! black emperor which i’m super excited for. i might catch kacey musgraves, charli xcx, or porter robinson, but its unlikely
Tell those masked Austrailian boys (Glass Beams) to do some actual east coast dates. Been dying to see them.
I caught Khrungbian back in July. Apart from the 20 minute technical difficulties, awesome show. In the process of moving, so not catching much else besides some really local acts.
Just caught my 20th Gizz show in Boston and my shows will officially be able to legally drink come the Cleveland show!
gonna see soul coughing on Sept 13!! and goose on the 27th
Going to The Polyphonic Spree at The Chapel tonight in San Francisco. They are one of the many pre Tame Impala psychedelic bands that time forgot. Looks like they are touring with 14 people in the band this time. Recent setlists looks dope.
I saw the inimitable Melt-Banana from Tokyo, Japan last night at a tiny local venue, it was such a fun show! My second time seeing them, they’re always a blast and honestly it’s my favourite venue in the world. I got to chat briefly with Agata afterwards, such a lovely bloke.
I’ve got several shows planned for the rest of the year: Mudhoney, Miki Berenyi, Paul Weller, Glen Matlock, Bad Manners, and the Jesus Lizard. Really looking forward to those!
Besides Gizzard at Red Rocks this week, I saw Mastodon and Lamb of God the other week. This year I saw Little Feat and The Last Dinner Party. Up next I have Kacey Musgraves, Ethel Cain, and Charli XCX to close out my year.
