My buddy passed along Dirty Three to me after his brother heard them on a Walking Dead episode. Turns out more people know about them than I’d imagined. They’re an instrumental trio from Melbourne that started in '92 and put out their last album around the time Gizz was getting started.
Warren Ellis is their violinist and has acknowledged King Gizz before, I think he’s somewhat of a fan. He’s also Nick Cave’s main collaborator for the last 20 years or so, so the boys would be well aware of him too.
Gotta do the Zappa mention. I’ve always thought that The Mothers of Invention/Zappa and King Gizzard shared some DNA especially with the recurring motifs/concepts/characters. Not to mention the extensive discographies. Certainly some crossover appeal in the fan base. If you’re looking to get in, start with Overnite Sensation, Apostrophe, One Size Fits All and Joe’s Garage. It’ll change your life.
This was the opening act for the second half or so of Gizz’s April 2022 tour. Totally not what I expected as a Gizz opening act but glad they did because they’re pretty awesome!
A lot of poeple ask about what else to listen to that’s like Polygondwanaland, and I’ve always been surprised that no one ever seems to suggest this Primus album:
Came out around the same time, and goes super proggy even with a folkloric colour themed concept. I guess its just not what people have come to expect from Primus, but easily my favourite album of theirs.
A classic pysch rock band I just jumped into live was Acid Mother’s Temple. You’ll love these guys if you love Mind Fuzz, Nonagon, and MotU, because they are fucking WILD. I’m not super familiar with their vast disography but I’ve heard they have over 100 albums. They’re a collective, so dozens of peolpe have writing and playing credit while a core group tours.
Saw these guys in a small punk bar and they blew my ear drums out even with plugs lol. They played probably 3-4 songs and then just absolutely blasted off into space with a 45 minute jam centered around “Dark Star Blues”.
Its truly something to experience live but they have some live recordings that are great as well.
