Thinking about going to Frankie and the Witch Fingers on the 21st here in Atlanta after hearing everyone speak their praises around here
Slightly chaotic last minute venue change, but good music was had!
Donāt miss Leah Senior in the US starting next month:
Only seen her as a trio in the past, but the five piece she supported King Gizz with last year really bring a great sound together, they all worked on the new album too so great synergy.
Best surprise was Delivery, really fun punk, switching vocalists and instruments all round and had a great loud time.
Ended up taking their record home over The Slingers, who were fine and well put together sonically, but really not my vibe now having seen what theyāre about on stage. Donāt know how invested Flightless Records are with these guys/what the connection is, but itās not what I expected from the label and didnāt really answer the question of what theyāre heading towards for me. They did have the biggest crowd which was a surprise as the The Lazy Eyes were the headline.
That slot was very well deserved too. Most of what you read about them is how their sound and songwriting is based off King Gizz and other contemporary Australian Psych (guilty), but I connected with it all much better live. Theyāre very young, and extremely familiar with their fancy gear, which they obviously take great joy in playing/using and that translated perfectly. Really pleasant and very tight performers. Previewed some new material that suggests a bit of a new direction as well.
I may catch some flak for this but you know what they say about the haters.
I saw DMB at the gorge over labor day weekend for the second time. I got into them in highschool and they were my first exposure to ānon-mainstreamā music and opened the door for me. I wouldnāt be into Gizz if I hadnāt been into DMB in high school.
Anyway their labor day weekend shows at the gorge are pretty special and the venue is incredible. Pretty hyped that Gizz is going to make it out there! Maybe next time theyāll do a whole weekend.
Iāve seen DMB 6 or 7 times, they put on a great show.
F the haters!
That being said dmb was kinda the mainstream band for my highschool (graduated '03) so I just could never get over that. My loss!
Never forgetā¦
Frankie and the Witch Fingers at Gaga Gasa in NOLA on Sunday! Melvins at Tipitinas at the end of the month
John McLaughlinās Shakti with special guest Bela Fleck. Tomorrow!
Not this month but I just picked up tix to see Bob Dylan in Philly at The Fillmore! Iāve seen him more times than I know for certain (probably 25 times since my first one in 1997). Heās not for everyone; Iām well aware of that. Iāve heard all of the complaints and know peopleās horror stories, but thatās never been my experience seeing Bob. There have been better and worse shows, but heās my hero, so just being in the same room as him is always enough for me.
Anyways, the last time I saw him was in a theater in Hershey, Pennsylvania in 2021. Absolutely phenomenal show. His voice is so fucking good right now (believe it or not) after all the training heās done on the American songbook via his Triplicate album, Shadows in the Night, and the other one of all the crooners, classics, and forgotten gems. His live show now features a big helping of Rough and Rowdy Ways, his newest album, plus some reworkings of old favorites (you can see him do those versions in Shadow Kingdom).
This show has a GA floor that is standing room only. I canāt believe thatās the setup because the past few times Iāve seen him have been in historic theaters. Pretty pumped to get up close to the legend for what could be the last time Iāll see him live. The man is 82 years old but he still makes me feel fully alive when I see him play.
just saw Tenacious D monday night, it rained but was a great time definitely some feel good nostalgia. got tickets to see Viagra Boys open for Queens of stone age at end of month about 15 mins from home. Also going see the next night in OKC, keep the party goingā¦ Not big into Queens but been listening to VB nonstop this year it totally fucks live i cannot wait!!!
Hope you get a cool Dead cover or two!
The Jeff Rosenstock show was GREAT! I was inspired by all the work done by folks to record Gizz shows and, on a whim, recorded a few of my favorite songs from the setlist. Turned out ok, I was kinda far away and the focus is on audience members rather than the bandā¦ but I am very glad I took these!
The Nude Party on 9/20 in Atlanta, and Farm Aid in Noblesville, IN on 9/23 - finally seeing Willie Nelson, and Bob Weir + Wolf Bros again!
Explosions In The Sky @ The Eastern in ATL this Tuesday.
I saw them at variety playhouse 15 years agoā¦ man time is funny. The show I was at in on archive tho!
Just wanted to see if any Gizz heads were coming out. If so holler at ya boy. Best friend and I will be there early. We can meet up for dinner/drinks if anybody would like.
I saw them in 2011/12 canāt remember at the Tabernacle. I need to see if thereās a tape of it. It was amazing. Super stoked for Tuesday. New album is really good imo.

Man Rosenstock got COVID and cancelled the rest of the tour! My wife and I were one of like 5 people in the venue wearing masks. Itās really going around right now, stay safe out there everyone!
LOTS of good points in that piece you shared
āLarge swaths of the live music industry are overeager to pretend weāre out of the pandemic. Weāre leaving behind many folks with disabilities and illnesses, which is not a new problemājust a new way the ableism inherent in many venue spaces is being expressed since COVID,ā Speedy Ortiz singer-guitarist Sadie Dupuis tells Pitchfork.
Thought this was well said. Also the stuff Jeff said later in the articleā¦ heās got a real way with words. Iām proud to be a fan of an artist that cares so much about his fans. He was really great at the show too, making sure everyone was having a good time and was safe.
His bassist made an interesting post as well:

Fortunately for Jeff he does have a good income, which is a theme heās actually exploring in his new album:
Donāt kid yourself
Donāt tell yourself that youāre not evil
'Cause theyāre cheering you on
Like youāve never done wrong
Donāt you pretend
The world is treating us all equal
When a person can starve as another one hops in a
Lyft plus to JFK
To Europe, expenses paid
I know itās not okay
But I still participate
And
Iām losing my mind
I gotta leave this place
Might go to the desert
'Cause I make enough to
Fuck off to the desert
from an interview:
He expects a few raised eyebrows for some lyrics on āLIFE ADMINā, a jangly cut which opens with Jeff assessing his options to escape a mental spiral: āMight go to the desert/āCause I make enough to/Fuck off to the desertā and āGot a new sweet pedal/And I donāt pay rentā. But he also felt compelled to be truthful: heās had a ālegit ass jobā for a while and āit just would have felt dishonest to not address that,ā he says. āI, in a small way, think I understand how Iām perceived by some and I thought it would be fucked up if I was still just like, āhey, Iām a struggling punk and like this and thisā.ā
Heās a composer for the TV Show Craig of the Creek, which I say good for him! Heās such a good dude and has always been. You can download his latest album for free right on Quote Unquote Records record label.
Anyway, thats not to say this isnāt gonna suck for him financially anyway. I just bought a HELLMODE vinyl and some merch from him.
