Pink Floyd - Pink Floyd at Pompeii - MCMLXXII. Have it on in the background but wow Front Row Concerts pulling through with really good Floyd content.
Billy Bragg & Wilco - Mermaid Avenue. They’re reuniting tonight at Solid Sound Fest, so I’m getting some listening in beforehand. NEPM is streaming it. Starts at 9pm EST!
Not right now, but this was my “bus to work” music for today.
I’m always late to discover things, so as usual I found these guys about the time they broke up. I’m surprised that I’ve even heard of Gizz.
Great album. Make sure to check out The House in the Tall Grass also.
Thanks – yeah, so far I have Masana Temples, House in the Tall Grass, and Forest of Lost Children (which I haven’t listened to as much yet).
Today’s bus music:
The Dukes of Stratosphear - 25 O’Clock. This one’s been on repeat a lot. Great throwback to ‘60s psychedelic rock from XTC.
Hey – great to find another Dukes fan! They were a big part of our road-trip soundtracks for a long time. We had the two-albums-in-one CD ("Chips from the Chocolate Fireball”), until it got too scratched to play anymore. The two re-release albums with bonus tracks were a good replacement. ![]()
They cite as their main influences Meshuggah, Porcupine Tree, Coroner, Devin Townsend, Opeth, Tool, Isis, Aphex Twin, Björk and Neurosis which is a pretty wild mix. I like it. They also went all the way from an Extreme Metal/Progressive Metal band to Post Rock/Progressive Rock.
Listened to this and already fell in love with it lmao it’s so good!!
Today’s bus-ride-home album:
I don’t know how much attention this album got in the US when it came out in (checks) 2001 (!), but I still really like it. And it’s a good answer to the “what guitar tones do you like” thread – especially the 12-string part in the first track, as well as “Too Much Sunshine” and “Tone Poem.”
New Modest Mouse
New Jack White
Johnny Blue Skies
Angine de Poitrine
working back through all the Floyd cuz neighbor disclosed is his fave
every summer tour Phish show repeatedly
New age Patsy Cline very cool
The Phish summer tour has been sick! do you have favorite show or jam?
Great picks all around, pretty similar to my current listening.
Also enjoying the new Slift album, Primitive Ring, and especially Blood Incantation’s 2 most recent albums.
Starting a new listening project today - 120 full concerts from King Buffalo released on their bandcamp! If you’re not familiar they’re an incredible 3-piece psych rock band from Rochester, NY.
Any suggestions for which of their studio albums to start with?
Slift, Primitive Ring, and Blood Incantation, eh? I have legit never heard of any of these, so thank you! Half the reason I wish I could make it to FOV is to learn about new bands!
So, I’m biased towards the MSG’s I attended (and tonight’s Phenway–just home, and going back tomorrow, this time with my wife and our 16 year old boy for his phirst show), but I think objectively the two Savannah shows are overall best of tour. Also, this is the Summer of Type II Everything–even Bouncing got two jam outs for the first times ever. They are simply performing at a masterful level every show.
Single fave song was the La Grange cover I got last Friday. Love when Phish covers, well, anybody.
Last Wednesday’s MSG was best of the run (I couch toured).
I did Eggy post-Phish at House of Blues tonight and they did their Interior People cover. Fucken fantastic.
For whatever reason I have been in a Scratch Acid mood, great damaged punk from Texas in the 80’s, pre Jesus Lizard. Contemporaries of Butthole Surfers, The Dicks, Big Boys, etc.
Kinda tough question, lol. All of their studio albums have good stuff but I don’t find any of them to be super consistent. Most of my favorite songs of theirs are on Orion, but Acheron or Regenerator would also be good places to start. Honestly if you’re looking to get into them for the first time this is the best place for it:
