Folks, I know I’m a day late to send you over there on Bandcamp Friday, but I really think the Gizzheads would vibe with a local (South African) band called Mouse. I saw them live a little while ago when they visited my city and they blew my mind.
On repeat recently, I’ve been listening Reverse : Universe, a concept album that uses spacefaring rodent metaphors to tackle themes of climate change & inequality. Why do I think of Gizz? No reason in particular.
It’s got a frantic prog/metal sound that they somehow manage with just two people?? Can’t recommend it enough.
(Give 'em a listen. You can get their whole discography on Bandcamp for less than $8.)
Syd Barrett - The Madcap Laughs
I’ve been listening to a lot of DEVO Hardcore, as of late. Those two records and Hardcore Live are really brown. Apparently I can’t include links in my replies, so my recommendations to sample are I need a Chick, Space Girl Blues, Man from the Past, Workin in the Coal Mine, Mechanical man. Buttered Beauties is super brown
Jackson C. Frank - eponymous
An early singer-songwriter masterpiece. If you don’t know Jackson C. Frank, check out his story. Incredibly sad and tragic, yet he carved some amazing songs out of a short life of trouble.
I’ve never heard the word “brown” being used in this context - what do you mean by this? Where does this come from?
That poster is trying to use the Ween superlative “brown" with other bands. The members of Ween developed some idioms that they used with one another which were then picked up by the fanbase.
Ahh, a Ween reference. Ok. So what does it mean? haha
New Musik - From A To B. Been addicted to “Straight Lines” and “Living By Numbers” over the last few weeks. Rest of the album is pretty good too.
It’s not really “trying” when I am doing so successfully. One neat fact about the phrase, though, it did not start with Ween. The Butthole Surfers’ first EP had multiple titles, one was self-titled, one was “peepee the Pirate EP” and the last was “the brown reason to live” which is where I believe they likely for the slang from. I just think if you understand what it means, it is quite a good descriptor for that type of music.
