Watcha Watchin? (Movies, TV etc.)

Wife and I finally gave What We Do in the Shadows a watch and it is hilarious, excellent comedy show to watch in short bursts.

We also do old-school horror movie nights and watched three this weekend. Eyes Without a Face was an amazing, old French film. The cinematography is excellent for the time period. Equinox was the exact opposite, extremely campy and bad in almost every way possible. Eraserhead is a cult classic, but we found it way too obtuse and hard to follow. I like surrealism, but this was almost tooooo surreal. All three are on Max, if you have a subscription!

Just watched Doraemon: Nobita’s Great Adventure Into the Underworld - banger movie

I felt the What We Do in the Shadows series failed to capture a bit of magic of the original movie. Would highly recommend that if you liked the series.

I just watched the original animated Cowboy Beebop. Great soundtrack and very deep writing. I was not expecting to like it as much as I did.

Right out of the gate I caught a Gizz reference in the first episode. Stu must have been a fan!

I went in blind with high hopes that were satisfied too.
If anything was missing, it was any kind of ā€˜lore’ that explained the bridge between they imaginary and ā€˜real’ worlds. Like it seemed a little lazy to get that strange and existential but not back it up? Maybe that doesn’t make sense.
Then I was expecting a bit more nuance and diversity with the whole sexism topic, but then maybe those things are much more relevant now than in the heyday of Barbie, which the movie seemed to be centred around.

Funnily enough, it was La La Land that made me ā€˜get’ Ryan Gosling and his ability with humour, and he was the part I was most anticipating in this and he completely nailed it.

What, you didn’t want the 1973 version?

I just started watching Jersey Shore. It’s like watching a nature documentary lowkey . Theres so many miscommunication issues in the show lol

This and the derivatives are the only reality TV shows that can really hook me for some reason. Though one of the contestants had a mental breakdown and had to leave halfway through the season of Floribama Shore that I watched, so doesn’t really convince me that its good to be watching haha.

Ugh, that sucks. That’s one of the reasons I always sit in the very back row. So no one can sit behind me and talk…

I saw Barbie last night and loved it.

Across the Spiderverse is still the best movie of the year for me though :spider_web:

I finally gave into the hype and watched ā€œThe Bearā€. My partner has worked in a kitchen for years and says the show is accurate in some ways and completely inaccurate in others. I liked the show though, super faced pace and a bit extra at times but still a very good show. Hilarious and very good cinematography.

I love Wed Anderson films but ā€œAsteroid Cityā€ didnt do it for me. Anderson’s films usually have a pretty gripping plot but this one felt flat by comparison. Also the whole weaving between the ā€œplayā€ storyline and the ā€œdigital black and whiteā€ storyline was hard to keep track of. Style was of course classic Wes Anderson but that cant carry the whole thing.

Loved the Bear. I’ve worked front and back of house and I found it mostly accurate!

I still really liked Asteroid City, but yeah it was way esoteric for him. Wasn’t expecting that at all and I suspect I’ll get more out of a re-watch. Shame to miss out on having Bill Murray, Steve Carrell instead stuck out like a sore thumb to me.

ā€œWeird: the Al Yankovic Storyā€, the Weird Al ā€œbiopicā€. Free on Roku TV and absolutely hilarious. Probably behind the curve on this one but I just caught it and the man is truly a master of parody if that wasnt obvious already. EVERYONE is in this movie too, stellar cast, although I thought I would have liked Radcliffe a bit more as Al because honestly he’s been living his best life since Harry Potter (check out Swiss Army Man as well if you haven’t).

Anyone into this yet? It’s wild man. Safdie Bros names on the poster caught my interest and glad I gave it a shot.

Its on in my household, so I’m only catching little bits as I walk past, but from accounts it does seem pretty out there.
I’d never considered that there is no legitimate telemarketing, like, no one is out there genuinely trying to sell proper products by cold-calling people which is a big tell.

Does anyone have Letterboxd ? I love using it to track the movies I watch, rate them, and write my thoughts down after I watch it.
Here’s mine !

Damn, Fight Club isn’t great? Sure it (pretty much) doesn’t pass the bechdel test or need any more praise heaped on it, but it doesn’t change how good it is.

FIght Club was great I think. A lot of people took it the wrong way, and maybe it was presented that way for a bit of that reason… glamorizing the violence and maybe making Tyler a bit too appealing (it feels almost like he isn’t the ā€œbad guyā€ and that he’s not ruining the narrators life). Ebert had an interesting take in his review. I don’t disagree with his take. But I still think the movie and the direction were both great. A lot of interesting discussions have been had aroud the movie… (including a ridiculous but fun fan theory) and I do think it was very well directed. So yeah, flawed but overall still great.

I think also deserving of mention are The Game and Seven. I liked Zodiac and I thought Gone Girl was OK.

But yeah not a fan of the both sides argument… not a good look :poop: and I do think he’s overrated in general, especially his more recent stuff.
