thread about Vinyl

Welcome @craigsmith. That’s a whole bunch of records! What do you like to collect, beyond KGLW, of course? (I’ve personally been stuck on cheap Ohio private pressings of late.)

@RattleRattleRattle thanks! There isn’t a whole lot of new stuff that I collect, but looking at discogs it looks like the biggies are: The Monkees (336 pieces), Duran Duran (186) and McCartney (83, Beatles 80). Stuff that stayed from childhood really, Monkees and Duran are the ones that I venture out into pressings from other territories, mostly for the artwork. On the lower end of stuff I collect, Floyd, Prince (mostly the singles), Phish and Steven Wilson/Porcupine Tree. The rest are all pretty much random. Private pressings are awesome, have a friend into collecting that kind of thing and I’ve been flirting with the idea.

@craigsmith Always cool to hear what others collect. I have some random Monkees sleeves. PMd ya about 'em.

Grateful Dead on vinyl here in Australia is very rare, so much so that I only found them for the first time a few weeks ago. It was only this random compilation which turned out to be pretty decent if you’re only looking to listen for a normal album length. But then yesterday I was at a market and found a guy with two copies of Live Dead (and a very battered Skull and Roses), so very pleased to pick one up.

Tangential: does anyone else like to take note of a particular musician’s neighbors on your shelf? My collection of Gizz is nestled between King Crimson and Rahsaan Roland Kirk :metal:

The spoor was on the air this weekend. Hit garage sales and a fleamarket. Spent about $45 and bagged the following:

Booker T. & the M.G.s - Melting Pot (VG)
Buffalo Springfield - Retrospective (VG+)
Teresa Brewer - Best Of (sealed)
Larry Coryell / Philip Catherine - Twin-House (promo, VG+)
Deep Purple - Deep Purple (VG/VG+)
Donovan - Sunshine Superman (G+/VG)
Marvin Gaye - In Our Lifetime (VG+)
The Incredible String Band - The Hangman’s Beautiful Daughter (VG/VG+)
James Gang - Yer Album (Pickwick reissue, VG+)
Billy Joel - An Innocent Man (VG)
King Crimson - In the Court of the Crimson King (G+/VG)
Wynton Marsalis - J Mood (VG+)
The Monkees - Changes (VG+, Rhino '80s reissue)
The Monkees - The Monkees Present (VG+, Rhino '80s reissue)
The Monkees - Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones Ltd. (VG, Rhino ‘80s reissue)
The Oak Harbor Boys - The Way We Are (VG+)
Dolly Parton - Love is Like a Butterfly (VG+)
Sly & the Family Stone - There’s a Riot Goin’ On (VG+)
Traffic - When The Eagle Flies (VG+)
Joe Walsh - The Confessor (VG+)

Ha, mine goes King Crimson > King Gizzard > King Tubby.

Pretty cool that you managed to pick up Changes. (am I not funny?)

I’m just staring to collect physical media again after a looooong time. Last year my son was gifted a turntable and a few Gizz albums, but now we are looking to complete the collection. I’m hoping to find them from some record shops to make it more of a scavenger hunt, but p(doom) is so tempting to hit buy.

We did pick up the re-release of Mind Fuzz recently and we’re loving it.

Pisces Aquarius is a killer record. That pressing is a mixed bag of mono, stereo and 80s remixes but it’s the one that I grew up on. Amazing haul there.

Yeah, I really like that one. Certainly the most cohesive Monkees record. “Listen to the Band” is such a jam.

The deep cuts in their catalog are fantastic. A lot of the outtakes from 68/69 are even better.

Glad i got to see Nesmith before he passed, quite a few times and met him once (and had a zoom meet and greet during the pandemic). Truly was a cosmic out there dude who weirdly fell into a made for television band. Never thought he would tour again, but he spent the last ten years of his life being VERY accessible.
