I got behind on reading these song histories each day, so just catching up. As has happened multiple times throughout this process, I’ve gained a whole new appreciation for an album. This time it’s Butterfly 3000. The part that really struck me was learning that the album is meant to become progressively more expansive. The description for Black Hot Soup has this quote from an interview: “The idea for the record was to keep zooming out, and for it to just feel bigger and bigger.” But then they decide to close with this hopeful message from Stu to his daughter, Araminta (whose name I learned from the Butterfly 3000 history). I’ve loved this album since I first heard it, but now it means even more to me.

The Silver Cord is out. That’s the final studio album but there’s still one day left. This went by very fast.

Yeah it has felt very fast to me too. I didn’t manage a final check over for every drop, but I have maintained the daily promotional tweet and listened along with every release including the demos now.
What an amazing resource for the fans! I have learnt so much about their music through all this, and we are already seeing many others make similar and surprising discoveries about a band we all thought we knew everything about already.

I must admit I’m keen to not have to think about it for a few days, but I’m just as keen to see how they start to develop as Europe tour kicks off.

Same. I’m totally ready for a break but I know between the tour and whatever upcoming projects they have that none of us will relax for long. At this point it’s all about updates and collecting new info for new projects as it comes out, which I think is much easier than having to dig to try and get one quote.

Demos Vol. 1-6 are now up! To make it clear, there are not individual pages for the various studio demos. These just cover the original songs like “Tea and Jam” and “Scared of Christmas.”

With that, the rollout is complete. The song histories project will continue to be updated with new info, clarifications, new embeds, etc as time goes on. As new music comes around, we’ll have all of that covered as well. Really want to stress how thankful I am to both @W.B.T.G.Slinger and @RattleRattleRattle for their work reading, editing and proofreading every single page of this currently 430 page document. I am so proud of what we’ve done and it makes me happy to see people using this as a resource. This is only the start.

Woooo!! Congrats all around!

I’m proud too! Its been inspiring seeing you come out with all this, and a great challenge to try and match your level to help deliver the best we could. Well done! I think you are the creator of the biggest individual Gizzard fan project, and I can’t see that changing for a while.

@TimelandIsWacky It was a privilege to get eyes on all of the song histories before they dropped. What an incredible foundation you’ve built. I see it as a massive milestone in “Gizz Studies.” Hats off and thanks for being receptive to our edits and suggestions. (And thanks to the site team at large for catching the errors that fell through the cracks!)

Flamethrower has been updated because of the debut. Documenting history in real time now.

One of my very favorite parts of our site is the collection of song histories. @TimelandIsWacky did such a great job writing them all.

This morning, I was looking at Gizz Tapes thinking about putting on a recent show. But then I saw The Happy Dog from 2014 and I ended up starting at The Wholly Ghost. I know the song but not as well as I should. So, I went to the history and found such a fascinating entry on the song. You can tell TimelandIsWacky really likes this one. Maybe if we can get enough people coveting this song, they’ll bust it out one of these days.

Bringing this thread back because I think it would be cool to share some small updates that get made. Cold Cadaver, Evil Death Roll, Invisible Face, Wah-Wah, Open Water, Billabong Valley, Flying Microtonal Banana, A New World and Some Context were recently updated.

Biggest changes:

  • My favorite new bit of info here is the story behind Open Water. Turns out it is inspired by John Wyndham’s The Kraken Wakes. Observant fans may remember that Stu was inspired by another one of his books The Day of the Triffids when making Cold Cadaver. Nice to have some info on the song as before this we only really knew some recording info.
  • According to a French interview with Stu Evil Death Roll, Invisible Face and Wah-Wah predate I’m In Your Mind Fuzz. That really puts into perspective how much they reworked that material over the years.
  • There’s some newly uncovered story explanations from Stu for Murder of the Universe.

Been slow lately but People-Vultures has been updated with some new info about the music video. The biggest change is that there’s a little more info about the Dark MoFo festival where the band shipped the head to. Nothing too big.
