Today’s round of Song Histories are for the first of five records the band released in 2017 and the first in the microtonal trilogy: Flying Microtonal Banana
As you may have seen, KGLW.net is mid way through rolling out detailed histories of every King Gizzard song by @TimelandIsWacky.
Full details are on The King Gizzette.
This thread is for feedback, sharing anything interesting you find in them (theres more than a novel’s worth of text to dig through!) etc.
At the time of this post, Polygondwanaland is due to go up later today, so keep an eye out for that as its definitely a favourite (mine included).
Congrats @W.B.T.G.Slinger & @RattleRattleRattle !!
This is top-notch bad-assery!
Pretty funny that a car’s alarm was the unintentional impetus for exploring time signatures…
love the story behind “Uh Oh I Called Mum”…
also love knowing that Stu thinks Amby has a skinny lil hot-chick body…
Here are some other fun snippets:
Stu: "One of the newest [songs]. It’s about being a shit kicker. A few people have said it sounds like Green Day, which is not really a good thing. Ah well.”
…
Stu: “This song is the shittest song on the album, so we put it at the end.”
…
Jason Galea calling out web video compression as being a limiting factor in making videos: “I think I could go way further than what I do with intensity, but have to hold back because their [YouTube’s] bitrate settings wreck anything that’s over-the-top fast, strobe-y, or detailed.”
…
Stu: “Actually we did play it once… No, we played it once. We played it once in 2014 at St. Kilda fest, I remember, and it went really badly so we never played it again.”
Ambrose: “that’s probably why I deleted it from my memory.”
Polygondwanalnd is live!
I love how blunt Stu can be sometimes:
Blunt Stu is great. “This song’s about footy! I fuckin’ hate footy!”
I was doing so well with reading the song histories each day but now I’m two albums behind! I’ve got to catch up. It’s been so fun listening to the entire discography album-by-album with all the added context. It’s been a true education.
Got a few more out!
- Gumboot Soup
- Fishing For Fishies
- Infest the Rats’ Nest
- Chunky Shrapnel
- Hear My Eyes: Suspiria
- Covers
It’s best to navigate through the covers on the blog post right now.
I read Fishies last night and Rats’ Nest this morning. As a recreational angler, it’s tough to reconcile my hobby with the band’s valid take in the opening track of Fishies. I can get behind all of their environmentalism, but I’m guilty when it comes to hooking fishies in the lip. That track even got me hooked when it was released but then I got turned off when I listened closely enough to understand its meaning. I’m glad I came back a couple of years later. Just couldn’t shake the hook.
Also the video for that song is spectacular.
Serves you right, now you know what it’s like to be the fishie for the angler.
K.G. is out today! Had it on yesterday while getting ready for uploading. Never listen to it much but there’s some great tunes on that one. Hopefully we get an Intrasport this year.
Ha I listen to KG and LW back to back fairly frequently, buncha bangers there!
I made them into a playlist to listen through without stopping, it totally works as one big album. The transition from Hungry Wolf to If Not Now is quite smooth.
BF3K has emerged:

As its so personal, Stu has had a lot to say about this album, so lots of background info.
Today is my day! It’s finally Timeland day! While we don’t have a ton of info on this one, there’s a bit of history to it that’s pretty interesting and there are some unique twists and turns such as the leaked version of “Smoke and Mirrors.”
Also out today are write ups about the various unreleased songs. Some of these were from the very early 2010s, others are quite recent. Best way to navigate through them is the blog post or the “all songs” tab.
I bet there’s no one reading this comment who already knew about every unreleased song in this list. Many are obscure to the point of having no info beyond an ASCAP registry, but definitely worth the read.
Satanic Slumber Party is up! Really not much for this one unfortunately but I love this EP. I really have to dig into the TFS discography more.
Song histories for Omnium are up!!
I have been waiting to listen to the album while reading these and I’m way behind. But i had to check on Presumptuous to see how it was handled. Seems like the best approach you could take at this point.
