What is Music League?

This is from the Music League User Guide on how it works:

  1. Each league is made up of a certain number of rounds.
  2. Each round has a musical theme, like ‘covers’ or ‘I want your sax.’
  3. When the round opens, league players are notified to submit a song that fits the theme (anonymously via Spotify link).
  4. When everyone has submitted (or the submission deadline arrives), everyone receives a link to the playlist to listen, consider, and then return to Music League to assign points and add comments to reminisce, toast and maybe a gentle roast.
  5. Once the votes are in, everyone will be able to see the results, including who submitted what, how everyone voted, and all the comments.
  6. Points are earned from round to round and accumulate through the entire league until a winner is crowned.

Music League is free (although the website does have ads, you can pay a modest fee to get those turned off) although it does work through Spotfy so an account with Spotify is required (which also limits the selections to whats on Spotify).

I’d be in. I guess you pretty much need a minimum amount of participants for it to work well?

The more, the merrier… Though I did a league with 3 people including myself and it was still fun. Normally leagues I’m in are 10-20 people.

This sounds like a lot of fun! Count me in

Seems like we have plenty of interest! Any ideas for categories for the first iteration of the league?

Here are some of the categories that we’ve had recently for inspiration:

  • Dance
  • RAGE MODE
  • Synth AF
  • Live
  • Sci-fi
  • Folk Off
  • Tropical Paradise
  • Play this at my funeral
  • Sex
  • Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming
  • Must have Horns
  • Woe is me

I’ve also done a couple leagues where we just include a random year and everyone submits songs that were released that year.

Here’s an idea for a theme - Music Festival Hourly Curation, 2 songs per round.

Round 1: 1:00 - 2:30 (opening set)
Round 2: 2:30 - 4:00
Roubd 3: 4:00 - 5:30
Round 4: 5:30 - 7:00
Round 5: 7:00 - 8:30
Round 6: 8:30 - 10:30 (headliner 1)
Round 7: 10:30 - 12:30 (headliner 2)
Round 8: 12:30 - 2:00
Round 9: 2:00 - 3:00
Round 10: 3:00 - 4:00
Round 11: 4:00 - 6:00 (sunrise)

Maybe a pre-party round?

I vote for the horns! Maybe start a google forms or something to garish votes and ideas?

I’m so glad Poo Poo is winning this poll.

I like the idea of an opening set, 2 headliners and then sunrise… those are great themes/prompts!

What would differentiate round 2 from 3, say?

lmao I thought I was down for any theme, but the ‘sex’ playlist might be a difficult sell to judge in earnest.

I started a google sheet here, anyone should have access to add theme ideas to the sheet. Great idea! If we can get some categories together I can throw up a poll and then start the league off.

I am more than happy to just throw the first one together with some generic categories as well if there aren’t too many suggestions this go round. When you start playing Music League for a bit, it’s hard to stop thinking of cool theme ideas.

Here’s how that one turned out for that round! As you can see the interpretations of the prompt were quite varied. My submissions were Massive Attack and Chris Issak.

my vote is for HORNS!

Main idea is to curate a music festival lineup from start to finish - you decide how the early afternoon slot differs from the late afternoon set.
