Curating KGLW.net's Notable Versions

No not at all! I think I hesitated to suggest both because I do think they are similar versions, but there’s cases like Slow Jam 1 where every performance in Oct’ 22 makes a damn good case to be notable.

I’ll whip up some descriptions for Magma unless anyone is chomping at the bit to write them.

I love the scatting in 8/24 Ice V and even more in 8/25 Work this Time. Magma opener is a super unique start to 8/24 for sure.

I’m cool with adding 8/24 magma! @chasebeck do you want to write that one up too?

As opposed to these types of manual curations, what if we had the ability to “react” or “endorse” a particular version of a song. That way, you could view the most “endorsed” versions of a song, and you wouldn’t require the admins to “curate”, but could instead let the community drive what best versions float to the top?

I know that’s a feature ask for the software that runs the site, but wanted to hear the community’s thoughts on it.

I’ve actually personally been working on a project to do this very thing. I called it gizzyversions and it’s very similar to https://headyversion.com/ where people vote on performances of grateful dead songs. The “beta” if you will was live for a few months but I took it down temporarily.

I got a bit sidetracked when my son was born but I’ve been meaning to get back to it. I don’t think it will replace having discussions and doing manual curation but I think it could be used as a tool to inform those discussions more. For example I think there’s a difference between people’s “favorite” versions and “notable” versions.

Oh big time, and I think that’s a great idea and would love to help test or contribute if I can. I mostly write python for my job but have dabbled in React.

At the end of the day, everyone will curate according to their subjective preferences anyway. My thought just comes from the nerd infighting that I’ve read over the years over things like “was that really a tease, a quote, or did they play that song?” and “was there was improv? should it be considered notable?”. That’s half the fun of following a band this closely, but having done that on phish.net for fifteen years, it can get a little old. I can also see the argument that fans with grievances will manipulate any lever you give them.

To me, headyversion and the project you describe get closer to letting people learn from the wisdom of crowds, and individuals. That way, if there was someone’s taste you really trusted, well, go see what they think.

For sure! The backend is a java project although it’s not so complex that it couldn’t be changed. The frontend was hastily built with nextjs and I’m planning to scrap it, so any frontend assistance would be welcomed. I can definitely let you know when I start back up again.

@chasebeck no rush or anything but you still good to write up the Magma descriptions?

I’m going to go ahead and post the next songs we’ll discuss shortly but no pressure either way.

Yea I have two of them in my notes, I’ll finish up Gorge and do 8/24 tonight!

I think San Diego Magma is a shoe-in but we can discuss that as well.

Next up:

Hypertension and FAFYL

Hypertension has 3:

FAFYL has just 1:

That Shanghai from today Nov 9 24 felt pretty special.

I will add it to the list!

Can we get this jam chart added to the ‘music’ header up top? Or am I an idiot and can’t find it?

I think Shows > Notable Live Songs is what you want

How about the Frost Raw Feel? First time this one has really gone out for a walk I think. 3+ minute intro jam that’s very chill and has Robot Stop and Witchcraft teases. The actual song doesnt take hold until after that portion. Then about 2/3rds of the way through they do a pretty, ambient jam before finishing the song. 10+ min runtime

@detlefschrempf thanks for the recs! I’ve gone ahead and added these and we can come back to review them as we go through the rest of the notables from this tour
