Curating KGLW.net's Notable Versions

Hot Wax from Nashville '24 is pretty unique.

It does a really rare thing of swapping out Cellophane in the Mind Fuzz suite (first time this has happened?) and as such maintains a high tempo, energy, and focus before diving back into IIYMF. Also briefly features some saxophone in the first minute or so.

Second that FAFYL

One thing we’ve been discussing especially now that tour is over is differentiating between notable versions and show highlights.

A show highlight would be a song that sticks out within a show vs a notable version which is unique in some way.

Since this Dragon jam has happened in FAFYL before I’d say that maybe this FAFYL is more of a show highlight than a notable version.

What do y’all think?

Re: the Fourth Colour

I fail to understand why 2024.05.15 Brussels would not appear on this list.
This was the version that broke the mold and set the stage for all further 2024 versions. It is the most essential. Hate to pull the ā€œI was thereā€ card but I was at all of the other versions mentioned minus 9.1 and can attest to 5.15 being the critical entry.

Hey, thanks for the rec! The main reason that one would not be listed is that we’ve started with the NA 2024 tour and will be working through older tours when we are able to.

That said I’ll add this one to the list for review and will take a look at it asap! Thanks again

Notable version of FAFYL is 8/14/23

Do am I in heaven next

I nominate Minnesota 24

I do agree that it is easier to compile notable versions with the NA 2024 tour due to the soundboard releases. Fingers crossed we get this year’s European tour (most especially Hamburg) retroactively as well.

That said - I see Cut Throat Boogie has Prague 2024.05.18 listed as a Notable Version.

The following suggestions may have been discussed already so SIAP. Sorry for the seemingly negative feedback, I do appreciate everything this site does!

I find the user interface naming confusing as the KGLW dot net setlists’ ā€œJam Chartsā€ leads to

Jam Charts Cut Throat2

a page titled ā€œNotable Versions.ā€ This page clearly lists ā€œkiller versionsā€ that the OP stated would not count as a Notable Version. IMHO notable versions should most certainly include jams that fans generally hold in high regard.

Additionally - from the setlist page : Clicking a highlighted song leads to its individual Songs page, however there is no link for Notable Versions / Jam Chart [like Every Time Played, History, etc…]

Lastly the mobile view setlists still highlights ā€œNotable versionsā€ however you are unable to hover over for the description like the desktop view [a great feature imo].

Again I hate that this probably comes off as bitching and want to re-iterate my hats off the KGLW dot net team for everything they do!

All good! We appreciate feedback!

There’s certainly exceptions that we’ve hit, mostly because of external suggestions we’ve received.

As far as what you see in those notable version descriptions, it is true that some of them are ā€œkiller versionsā€ vs something like a notable jam. We’ve historically had a broader definition of notable so that’s why some of those are in there. We’re going to be clearing out old ones that no longer apply.

As for your comments on the UX of the site, we appreciate this feedback as well! I’m going to share this with some of the other team members and we can look into it.

Please don’t feel bad at all for making these suggestions! We welcome constructive criticism  Glad to have passionate users that we can share this project with!

Trying to get more to shows I wasnt at, but wrapping up my thoughts on those I attended since Im the most familiar with them:

Paso Robles- Antarctica
Im like 75% on board that its notable, but do think it should be discussed. Its the longest Antartica theyve played, by a fair bit. They skip the final chorus around the 4 min mark (I remember the crowd kind of singing it). In its place they slip into a really nice 2-3 minute jam led by Stu. They finally get back to the last chorus around the 7 min mark to finish up.

Frost- Im In Your Mind
The whole suite is notable, but the lead track especially so. The longest IIYM theyve played also by a fair bit. Not a full blown jam but some major variation from the usual way it is played. They find a pocket based on the drum and bass groove of the actual song and stay in it for a few minutes longer than normal. Good stuff

What makes that hypertension stand out compared to the others for you?

Just based off the 5 I caught this year
2024.11.21 Miami
2024.11.03 Paso Robles
2024.05.22 Hamburg
2024.05.19 Vienna
2024.05.15 Brussels

The Paso Robles stood out, don’t know how much of an analytical breakdown you want I just thought it was the best jam out of the above

Would love to hear any sort of specifics you’re willing to share! I remember that Hypertension including some teases but we didn’t flag it as notable, but of course we are willing to reevaluate.

Alright yall next up is The Silver Cord, which has two notable versions:

Let’s have a discussion about how we feel about each, and afterwards I’ll link a poll where we can vote on if it’s notable or not (trying something new!)

8/20 Is an excellent early rendition of the song, while it has some rough spots, those are very much overshadowed by how good this performance was. Some moments I’d point out would be the build up before the 14:00 minute mark, and the subsequent climax there. The heavy trance feel around the 10 minute mark is also one of my favorite parts of this performance. I’d say this could considered as a notable version.

11/6 Is another excellent performance, yet is quite different from the previous one. The performance is much stronger all around, with each section transitioning or developing smoothly. The beginning of the song through the chorus is as ethereal as ever, with an excellent dark turn from that point on, with weird synth textures and excellent drumming from Cavs. The ending is also quite interesting, taking an ambient turn. Without a doubt, it’s a notable performance for sure.

Phoenix Antarctica has a really cool Mind Left Body-like jam and some vocal improv from Stu.
