Curating KGLW.net's Notable Versions

I like it @HarmlessSkink !!

Given how Billabong Valley has out of nowhere become the Amby wander song on this tour, I think NYC is unquestionably notable. The fact that the band brought their own inflatable boat to the Gorge for Amby to crowd-surf on speaks to how much fun they had with this one. Feels very much like a lightbulb moment for the band.

I donā€™t think Nuclear Fusion is. I am about as biased as could possibly be as I literally made the sign with Gabby that day, but bringing fans on stage happens damn near every time they play it now. Unless Iā€™m really missing something, she is just a fan like the rest of the people who got up there on tour. Not sure as a performance it earns its spot on the chart.

Iā€™d like to submit for notable considerationā€¦

8/28 Theia - Transitioned out of Extinction, the band drifts from the songā€™s electronic DNA making way for an electric rendition that prominently features guitar. The songā€™s bright synths lead to delicate guitar lines before an attention commanding jam climbs to an overdrive soaked crescendo.

Itā€™s a super striking and distinct Gizz performance. Stu picks up his guitar about 5 minutes in and by the end of the song the entire band are on their ā€˜traditionalā€™ instruments. Not a single Theia - or really any performance from the band - sounds like it. Feels almost like a hybrid of the Theia we usually get and what they did with the acoustic Theia.

Added! Thanks

Sounds good to me! Want to take a stab at a description for Billabong?

Anyone else have thoughts on this one? We could also wait to discuss it until we get to the other Theia versions we have queued up.

Sure !

8/17 Billabong Valley - Performing the first verse from an inflatable gator raft held up by the crowd, Ambrose delivers impassioned vocals throughout the song. Colorful guitar work winds into Billabongā€™s iconic slow-down section where, after Stu takes a quick restroom break, the band stick the landing. The first of the ā€œAmby wanderā€ Billabong Valleyā€™s that became a definitive staple of the 2024 NA tour.

Totally cool with circling back when we get to Theia.

On to Perihelion! We have 2 potentially notable versions of this song, both coincidentally featuring guests. Let us know what you think!

8/19
8/31

Iā€™d say special guests always make a performance notable.

I tend to agree, especially the one with Timmy. I could see an argument for a sit-in not being notable if it was super par for the course, but neither of these are that.

Jayā€™s drumming on Perihelion on 8/31 was super fun. He really attacks the drums.

Iā€™m with that. Both.

Iā€™ll give it until tomorrow if anyone wants to dissent but if not I can go ahead and expand the descriptions for each of these.

Weā€™re going to double up again this time to start off the week with Magma and Wah Wah!

Magma has 3 notable versions from this previous leg of the tour:

Wah Wah has just one:

Let us know what you think! Happy listening

PS I am aware that the issues with the internet archive are causing downstream effects with the tapes website, but I am still linking for posterity. You can obviously find the official recordings of each of these songs on spotify/bandcamp/etc.

Edit: Gizz Tapes is online!

Making a crazy play here but I think 9/9 Wah Wah should be notable rather than 8/19. Both are stretched out to about the same length and have similar trajectory, but 9/9 feels a lot tighter to me. 8/19 kind of meanders a bit towards the beginning of the jam while 9/9 is a lot more driving, feels like they know where they are going rather than feeling things out. Obviously up to taste, but on back to back listens 9/9 feels so much higher energy, goes by quicker/holds my attention more. Both are very pretty renditions, but I think 9/9 edges it out for me. (Also 9/9 has an AIIH? Tease so thatā€™s auto-points, maybe Iā€™m being blinded by that.)

Ran through the Magmas a couple times and I think they are all notable, the song had a really good summer.

8/19 is maybe the best Magma ever imo. From the first to the last note itā€™s played as confidently as the band has ever played it, feels like theyā€™re showing off. A longer than usual intro and countless little flourishes (like those in the ā€œA rumbleā€¦ā€ section) add so much flavor and character to this performance. As if being maybe the tightest ever version wasnā€™t enough, they take the outro jam to the next level by stretching out multiple minutes further than usual, cooling things down before building to a second intense peak, even heavier than the usual heavy outros.

9/5 is a bit messier but is possibly the heaviest Magma. The drumming goes so hard on this one thereā€™s moments (like the final verse) it almost feels like overplaying, but they tow the line well. An incredible performance from Cavs in particular. Of course none of this even mentions the really cool Rats in the Sky fake-out that kicks it off, not to mention its context in a long jam sequence. Magma is really rarely jammed into or jammed out of - if at all - so for it to exist within a b741 suite and for it to be so slickly integrated feels notable in its own right.

Before listening my recollection of 9/14 was that it was my favorite Magma ever, but revisiting 8/19 kinda stole its thunder. That said, comparison is the thief of joy and Gorge Magma still compares favorably to just about any other Magma out there. Leaning a little more funky/jammy than heavy sets this one apart pretty well. It strays further from studio magma than usual in the second jam and features some of the most creative guitar lines in any gizz jam. Super distinct outro to boot. Joey wasnā€™t kidding when he said it was a good one. If one of them had to get dropped, Iā€™d say it should be this one, but I personally think itā€™s still unique enough that it should remain notable.

Hell yeah. They were really killing it with magma. I think itā€™s one of their best live songs and itā€™s been in my top 5 since the KEXP session.

Iā€™ll make a point of listening to the 9/9 Wah Wah today.

On the topic of Magma love, I would like to point out just how awesome the 8/24 version is. I hadnā€™t listened to this set until recently and that version blew me away. Ice V of this one is also really fun.

I love this thread and canā€™t wait to see which tracks we get to next! I might be willing to contribute if needed as well.

Iā€™ll give this magma a listen! Thanks for the rec! Definitely feel free to contribute!

I think youā€™re spot on with everything you said about the 3 Magmas, and I definitely see what you mean about 9/9 Wah Wah after listening. Would you be opposed to us marking both of them as notable?
