DC has a real chance on this one, too. That tour-opening Tap is no warm up song.
This one’s a bit tricky to me because relative to the amount of dripping taps this tour they all stick out to me as unique.
8/15 is a masterclass in teasing and is a very classically gizz approach to the dripping tap. The jam that opens up after the second chorus here is insanely beautiful to me, with the Antarctica teases and quotes and the AIIH tease really pulling the song together by tying the old to the new. More than any other tap this tour, this one really feels musically notable to me. Not to mention it was the very first thing they played in the US in 14 months.
It’s not only that 8/20 featured a Stu water dip, but also the jam around his pilgrimage that really cements this one as notable to me. They really had fun with this one with all the alternate lyrics and 46 & 2 teases from Joey. I’d say notable.
9/4 isn’t on the list but is cool for being the first time I’ve heard them do that recursive tap thing where they go straight into the “Drip, drip from the tap don’t slip” section from the spacey jam. Maybe the first tap where they don’t stop playing after that first chorus?
9/11 however does a similar thing but is a lot faster, a bit tighter, and a lot more “fun” with Amby’s very vocal fear for his life. I think not only this pick notable but it achieves everything 9/4 did in less time.
My personal verdict is that what we have currently just needs descriptions,
I think I am pretty much of the same mind as you on these ones. 8/15 and 8/20 are locks for me.
Would you be interested in your descriptions from your comment being used?
Yeah of course! I reworded them for the chart but feel free to make further edits.
8/15 - A masterclass in teasing and a very classically gizz approach to The Dripping Tap. A blissful jam opens up after the second chorus, with Antarctica teases and quotes driving the jam towards a rewarding peak. One of the greatest ways to open a tour.
8/20 - A long and wild jam highlights one of Stu’s now signature crowd-surfing river dips. Alternate Antarctica lyrics from Amby and a plethora of teases - notably 46 & 2 (Tool) for a large duration - soundtrack Stu’s departure and return. A closing Tap to end all closer Taps.
9/11 - A blisteringly fast and wet The Dripping Tap. An intense rain storm rolled in shortly before the band took the stage, concerning Ambrose in particular as he voiced his fear for his life throughout the performance. Out of the second chorus a familiar, yet faster than usual, jam emerges. The band wastes little time re-entering the song proper with a frenetic and energetic finish. Following the song, the show was halted for 22 minutes due to torrential downpour.
Thanks a ton! Adding them to the site now. Spoiler alert: next up is a double, because each song only has one notable version from the tour (Cut Throat Boogie and Doom City).
Will try to get the post up later today.
Alright! Next up we have both Cut Throat Boogie and Doom City.
Both notable versions come from the 8/16 Forest Hills show.
Here is a show with a “control” version of Cut Throat, and here is one for Doom City.
Please let us know what you think!
I’m not relistening to either rn as i’m all over the place, but as a FH attendee, Doom City was nothing short of notable. I was surely caught up in the moment recovering from the pit party of All Is Known, but I remember an incredibly long, slow, jammy intro, and I was the only one who could tell it’s Doom City. Hopefully someone else can do a writeup but that’s my testimony. Don’t remember Cut Throat too well but it kicked ass and flowed out of Daily seamlessly. Thx @InblEric for helping out with this project!
I just came here to say that I don’t think Doom City is notable besides its long intro. Not sure that’s enough.
That’s absolutely true, there’s nothing notable about Doom City itself except the long intro which I suppose could or could not be included as notable. Interesting
Your take on it makes me reconsider my position some. I’ll need to listen to more Doom Cities to see. But we have being leaning towards including rather than excluding versions. The extended intro is certainly out of the norm, and that connects to our criterion that it should be something unique not just a “killer version.”
Totally agree it has to be more than “really good killer version” or something like that. Like you said Doom City itself is regular but the intro might warrant an inclusion
I pushed for it initially but am also not too strong on Doom City as notable. While I do really love that intro jam, the band has been doing some long intros all year. 5/16/24 Gamma Knife is a great example. Ultimately I think it comes down to whether notable versions should be significant performances within context or just particularly good performances. If it’s the former I’m a hard no but if it’s that latter I’m a hard yes.
I’m less on the fence for Cut Throat Boogie which I don’t think is notable. Great transitions in and out of songs are a pretty common occurrence at Gizz shows and the sequence that it was in featured about 5 of them. Great performance, but again, I wonder if making the notable chart should take a little more than being a good listen. I would argue the 5/18/24 Cut Throat Boogie that featured a Flight B741 medley jam is a much better contender for a notable. I even personally prefer 9/1/24’s Daily Blues → Cut Throat Boogie - not that I necessarily think that one needs to be notable either.
Sounds like Doom City has a better argument for being notable than Cut Throat, which seems iffy, although both feel like tossups to me.
Anyone feel super strongly about one or the other being a notable version? If not I think we can probably take them off. I think the points made about the intro jam being a common occurrence is a great point, especially because the Doom City part of Doom City is pretty standard.
I don’t feel particularly strong about either and @chasebeck’s argument got me on that side.
+1 on the Prague Cut Throat Boogie with the medley being notable.
Would love to get a writeup from either you or @chasebeck that we can throw on the site for that one!
Next up is another double!
A couple Forest Hills tracks! I’m going to stop posting suggested “control” versions now that I’ve introduced the idea a few times. If you’d like me to start posting them again please let me know. I still suggest listening to a more typical version of each song to get a benchmark of course.
Never wrote one of these before, but something like:
“After a smooth transition out of Ice V, Amby’s harmonica wail throws us into the Cut Throat Boogie. The band plays the first couple of verses straight, which is a stomping good time as always, but the real kicker is the appended blues jam. Amby once again takes the lead with a killer harmonica solo, before the band starts dishing out a dynamic plethora of teases of Flight b741 material, including repeated Sad Pilot riffs, as well as the never-before heard Rats in the Sky, Raw Feel and Field of Vision.”
Edit: Double post
