Celebrating Zappa’s birthday by watching this. Very in-depth breakdown of Andy. The stuff with his translator is super interesting.
Got Moon Zappa’s memoir Earth To Moon for Christmas and its equally fascinating as it is harrowing. There are so many stories in this I’ve never heard before, many of them challenging for anyone who has looked at Zappa as an icon or hero (though not all are and some give some context to his work like the echidna story). Not done yet but I would recommend it to the dedicated Zappa fans who want to know more about Moon and the family.
King G played Willie the Pimp over the PA just prior to taking the stage at Paso Robles… knew it would be a sick one after that
I should really listen to this record more. Some really cool cuts on it like this collab with Captain Beefheart.
Always loved how Zappa would return to old things he had written and rework them.
Did not see it mentioned on here, but Cruising with Ruben & the Jets is a satirical doo-wop album that is a fun little thing.
Lyrically, it felt like Frank playing with his food and it was a meal he did not enjoy, but its not overtly sarcastic enough that anyone would notice if they never knew it was the Mothers, which adds to the humor and intrigue of the album IMO.
There are a few songs I come back to from time to time, this being one of them.
Some great footage from '80. One of my favorite lineups for sure.
A buddy of mine recently found this among his parents’ old records. He’s 100% certain they bought it having no clue that it was a Zappa project.
Seeing Dweezil tomorrow night. I missed him last time around but I’m glad he decided to come back this year. Listening to a lot of '73-'75 Zappa today.
Third time seeing Dweezil and it was fantastic. What a show. He really captured the feel of those early to mid '70s shows with all those era-specific arrangements and diversions like the Approximate dance contest. The addition of stuff like Filthy Habits and Punky’s Whips were the highlights for me though. Makes me wish he did a Lather show with all of that material. The new lineup is awesome too.
Listening to a bunch of unique arrangements from over the years and it makes me wish there was a KGLW.net for Zappa. To my knowledge there’s not a database of when certain arrangements started being played/stopped being played.
there’s Zappa Wiki Jawaka… they’ve got two lineups for Orange County Lumber Truck for example
Wiki Jawaka is great but I’m looking for more of a tour by tour rundown of how the songs changed.
Frank would be proud of Dweezil.
