This is a thread to talk about the sci-fi/fantasy layers of bands you love. KGLW, of course, but for me that’s also Hawkwind. I wrote a blog about it ( In Orbit: The Effects Of Hawkwind’s Gravity On King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard ) and thought it would be cool to get a broader discussion going.
I need to go find my “Set The Controls for the Heart of the Sun” t-shirt for reading this thread. ![]()
Really enjoyed the blog post – lots of things there that I need to track down and check out.
hello. I’m the mayor of this topic ![]()
but first your article
Thanks for the kind words!
I was introduced to Hawkwind by my old psych/garage rock record shop owner during Record Store Day years ago.
I was just scratching the surface of Krautrock/Psych/Garage and he was an expert.
Their self titled album was released and I regretted passing on it. The next year (maybe2017) The Best of The United Artist Years was released and I dove in. I’ve been on the journey since.
Im looking forward to reading ![]()
love love love absolute love – I wish I could write like you, btw
a couple of highlights:
-
in his own words (in White Line Fever), Lemmy was kicked out for “doing the wrong kind of drugs” – that is, speed instead of psychedelics
-
my labrador (sometimes referred to as Penny-dragonic apocalypse) SAW Hawkwind at the age of 10 months
-
bigger space between paragraphs and indentation: DAYS OF THE UNDERGROUND
where a perspective is offered that allows the utterance of the words “Hawkwind are the most influential rock act ever (Beatles* and maybe Elvis excluded)” and “in their revolutionary music distribution model, KGLW are the new Hawkwind”.
Uh I’d love to chat about this.
EDIT: forgot the asterisk
*Beatles, particularly in the form of Sir Paul McCartney, are the most influential music act of the past century – sooooo ready to debate
Agreed about Rattle’s excellent writing! But you should give it a shot, too. Looks like you’ve got a blog post in you! Hit us up if that sounds like fun.
Doremi has really been sitting right with me. It’s such a journey of an album!
OK – I need to stock up on some Hawkwind; it’s been a long time.
One little space-music oddity is one of my favorite bands covering Floyd:
Also – there’s this “Space Rock” sampler set (six CDs in old-people format). I have it, but haven’t really dug into it yet.
You’re too kind!
I’m jealous of your Lab, haha.
Good points all around. Days of the Underground is a solid read–really enjoyed it.
I just realized that my contribution to this thread so far is a self-proclamation and a dog
I’ll assume you’re familiar with the story of Gong, from the idea of an “open” band (sounds familiar?) and the resulting family, to the illness and death of Daevid Allen and the second reincarnation of the band.
New Gong, shall we call them, continue the “what if Hawkwind could actually play and decided to be Soft Machine, also Monty Python is on tv”-tinted prog rock of Old Gong
, but have the wisdom of dropping the teapot zero babble epic, substituting it with their own space exploration lore, one which is still bright – in its own way – but is their thing and, yes, it’s very spacey, Kavus’ guitar is a spaceship and Sun Ra would probably love this
so, this is my invitation to go check out New Gong
and they kick all asses live, with I swear to Brock entire segments where they went Zu jazzstarfuck
Everyone here but me has heard of them it seems, but I can’t recommend Henge enough. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mZhI-jdzqU0 Entire albums are wild and there is an edm remix of one of them that goes so hard.
they were touring uk with Gong ![]()
