See that bit of fluff stuck to the flower? That’s a caterpillar camouflaged as a bit of fluff. It’ll eventually change into an adult Emerald moth.

Spry Bay, Nova Scotia - in a really nice and scenic provincial park, with a disastrously muddy trail the day we were there.
I saw the most incredible rainbow over the weekend with a bunch of really cool shit I’d never even knew rainbows could do, and learned bunch of really cool rainbow science in the process. Praise Gaia!
Full arc, end to end, full arc double rainbow as well. Definitely the brightest rainbow I’ve ever seen. The secondary arc was about as bright as a normal rainbow.
As if that weren’t cool enough, since it was sunset the violet and blue hues were almost completely absent (these are the shortest wavelengths of light and the first to scatter at sunset, hence why sunset light feels more warm and yellow/red, like the light from an incandescent bulb).
And most amazingly of all, to the naked eye the main rainbow appeared to go through the color spectrum more than once! Turns out this is a “supernumerary” (or “stacker”) rainbow, which forms only when the water droplets are of a certain, small, and perfectly uniform size. If the droplets are not uniform, the interference cancels itself out and only a typical rainbow appears. There is even the faintest third stack!
The additional sets of the color spectrum are formed by an interference pattern of scattered light wavelengths – some wave lengths interfere constructively and these are what is seen as the color spectrum repeats itself. Its also a natural representation of the wave behavior of photons. Back when scientists were debating the wave/particle duality of photons (is it a particle? is it a wave? is it both?), supernumerary rainbows were used as evidence of the wave behavior, as they can only occur if photons behave as a wave.
I ran around like a madman taking photos. Didn’t go “full double rainbow meme guy”, but boy I was like 90% of the way there. What an adrenaline rush! ![]()
