Does anybody know how Gizzard’s crew gets Jason Galea’s animations and the other visual projections onto the screens at live shows? I’m just curious about how it all works.
I guess it’s not just projection – I’m wondering how they make the digital (?) graphics that are projected, like:
…or how they alter/distort live camera feeds, like:
(both pics are from the Merriweather Post show in August 2025)
We actually have an interview in the works with Terence that may shed some light on your question. My understanding is that the video distortions are Jason, though.
Shed light …. I see what you did there.
Looking forward to it!
I couldn’t get into too much detail, this really isn’t my area of expertise, but I have stood right behind Jason at several shows. His setup seems to primarily be based on some Mac software named VDMX6 Plus. Some of the visuals are generated and manipulated live — it seems to have a somewhat similar workflow to Max/MSP if you’re familiar with that at all — and some are just clips he’s launching. The camera effect you posted a photo of is just what happens when you point a camera at the screen it’s outputting to — it’s called the howlround effect (the title sequence for Doctor Who in the 60s was produced the same way, for instance — check out this Wikipedia article for more).
Here’s a few photos I took of his setup on the rave tour, being a huge gear nerd as I am. Maybe they’ll point you in the right direction if you want to research this further. They’re a mix of London night 1 and Tilburg photos.
Wow – thank you! Looks like an interesting rabbit hole … ![]()
