Literature thread - What are you reading?

This is a hefty book on a subject I’m very interested in right now. It’s my second attempt to get through the book, and I’m making steady progress. Pairing the read with lots of meditation sessions has been feeling good.

Still making steady progress through the book I posted above, but also started reading some fiction. Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler. It was written in '93 and opens in July '24 onto a dystopian vision of our present where society has broken down due to climate change and a lack of water. It takes place in southern California where people live in little walled enclaves and have to protect each other from thieves and worse. Meanwhile, the protagonist dreams of “Earthseed” and heading off into the stars for a new future. Definite King Gizzard vibes.

I’d been meaning to read this for a long time as it’s one of the early Cli-Fi (climate fiction) books. Well worth checking out if you ask me at 90 pages in.

…and I’m done with Parable of the Sower. I haven’t read a book that quickly in a while. Highly recommended!

I LOVE BOOKS!!

i recently just reread Siddhartha by Herman Hesse for the second time. the story is short, but it can take me ages to finish one part because of how rich the text is, and how applicable it is to my own life, aspirations, fears, etc. it’s really powerful, and as someone who has a weird relationship with religion, this was such a welcoming yet encouraging book to read because the element of spirituality is not aggressive by any means. it just makes you questions things which i really appreciate when reading.

i don’t want to spoil anything at all, it really is best to go into it without a clear idea of what it’s about, at least in my opinion.
if anyone’s read this book or anything else by Hesse lmk!! i also read Demian and i’ve been meaning to reread it as well. lots of things to ponder about i love it

I have listened to Siddharta as an audio book, which has never been a great format for me.
Nonetheless I got a lot out of it and will do it justice with a proper reread one day. Especially now that I have read more in general that is relevant to the spiritual side of it.

I read Siddhartha on college Spring Break 1998 skiing at Steamboat Springs. I thought it was great and affirmed a lot of what i was thinking and feeling at the time.

I’m still slowly reading that Mindfulness book which is a deep read of the Satipaṭṭhāna Sutta, a core Buddhist text. I should reread Siddhartha after that. It’s been a long time.

At the same time, I’m blazing through Jeff VanderMeer’s Hummingbird Salamander. I really liked his Southern Reach trilogy and his shorter novel Borne. This is a pretty big departure from the supernatural horror of those books, but I’m enjoying it. This one is much more a mystery thriller wrapped up in taxidermy and environmental crime.

Totally agree! Audiobooks are hard since I either space out or I fall asleep lol.

I can never guess when I reread it, it’s been only a few times but it completely inspires me each time. Mainly to get up and do something LOL but definitely impacts my idea of spirituality and attempt to maintain the peace haha. Hope you enjoy it again!

Exactly. Gives me hope not gonna lie LOL

I’ll have to check that out!I recently picked up some ethnographies about Buddhism in China so I’m slowly expanding into more Buddhist texts and it’s fascinating. Thanks for the mention!

I haven’t read many supernatural horror or thrillers, would you recommend this one for a start?

I’m currently about halfway through Enjoy The Experience, edited by Johan Kugelberg, Michael Daley, and the inimitable Paul Major, one of my favorite music writers of all time. This is a mindblower all about privately pressed records. Hard to find but highly recommended!

I have loved this and kept it close to my heard ever since I found it on the back cover of The Portable Jack Kerouac.

Yeah, James Islington is great. Previous trilogy was really good too.

When is the next one coming out? I read the licanius trilogy and enjoyed that.

Right now I’m on the 7th book of my elderling reread. It’s so good. Read it the first time five years ago.

I’m not sure when the next one comes out? It was good though, wasn’t it?!

I’ve been thinking about those Robin Hobb books for a long time. I take it they’re great?

Ever read the Jade trilogies?

I backed Sanderson’s secret project Kickstarter on a whim when it came out. The only Sanderson I’d read before was his Wheel of Time work.

I’m on the second one (Frugal Wizard) right now. It’s been fun.
