Album Listening Club: Bran Van 3000 - Glee

Still good after 3-4 listens now, I think I enjoyed the more Funk oriented songs like Disko Arabesque more.
Only just noticed Zuhtu was a live recording, cool that they’re that tight.

Overall I love the concept of mixing these traditional instruments with modern psych pedals/production etc. so really glad to have learnt about these guys with their strong debut album.

This week, we will be listening to @Listening_Wind 's selection: Death - For the Whole World to See

An excellent proto-punk album (it predates the Ramones & the Sex Pistols) that is widely unknown.

hyped as hell I love this album!!! I put it on for my morning routine and it’s all kinds of awesome, the vibe is really strong, it’s punk, it’s wild and it’s fast but these dudes also have a very tight sound. “keep on knocking” has been on my skating playlist since I found it, it’s just ripping. good choice!!

In this context, there is also the band Rough Francis. The band was formed to pay tribute to the music of their father and uncles.

Punk is my go to for skating at the moment, and I’ll definitely be trying this as I really enjoyed it.
Makes you wonder how much proto Punk from the era is still out there having never been released.

Also interesting that this is the second album by an artist called Death that we’ve had for the club so far.

that’s cool!! have you made any go-to playlists for when you go for a sesh? I made one specifically to skate to but I usually end up putting on old mixes haha

I’m never really one for playlists, I usually just queue up a couple of albums. If not Hip-Hop, the Punk I would put on recently would be:

  • Pinch Points - Process
  • Amyl and the Sniffers - Comfort To Me
  • Eddy Current Suppression Ring - Primary Colours
  • Snooper - Super Snooper

Or just like whatever Oh Sees or The Ramones.

They definitely deserve all the credit for pre-dating the Sex Pistols and the Ramones, but this has inspired me to go back and listen a some other proto-punk this week and I’d recommend revisiting The Stooges debut if you haven’t in a while. Mind blowing that that was seven years before this Death recording.

Thoughts on extending the club to be a fortnightly selection instead anyone?

Yeah, the Stooges and MC5 were laying the groundwork as far back as the '60’s.

And Hawkwind. Many artists in the initial wave of British punk cite them as an influence.

This week’s selection by @Lark2112 is Gentle Giant - The Power and the Glory.

“I wanted to choose a classic prog album that reminded me heavily of Gizz but I wasn’t sure how, there was a lot of obvious choices but I had to be clever here. My choice ended up being Gentle Giant’s The Power And The Glory. Gizz mirrors prog in lots of ways but the one I want to focus in on is the advanced use of rhythm they like to play around with using multiple melodies intersecting like some sort of busy street. This music is not at all conventionally groovy but it definitely is infectiously energetic, I would say this album gives me heavy Poly/Laminated Denim vibes from the basslines alone. Overall this is a classic prog album I like recommending to people wanting to hear more experimental rock and I hope it tickles your fancy.”

Great album! I love GG. The ugliest band in prog? (But they sure play pretty.)

How dare you compare Gordon Lightfoot (RIP) to Steve Howe!

Gentle Giant really surprised me tonight! Wasn’t familiar at all and I let myself think it was just going to be King Crimson-lite. Maybe it is a little, but all those elements of Funk throughout were very different and worked shockingly well with the grand Folk band moments. The cover artwork and the song titles really give a stronger impression than the subtlety you actually get from the music.
I’ve never been that into this kind of classic Prog, but I could certainly get more familiar with this band.

In a Glass House and Octopus are must-hear GG albums from where I stand.

Completely new to me but I love it!!! That’s not usually what I’m drawn to naturally but I listened to it twice yesterday. First prog for me. Thanks for the discovery

Glad you guys liked my choice, prog is not always everyone’s thing so that’s why I felt I needed to go out of the box with this one and clearly I chose a good one
