Album Listening Club: Bran Van 3000 - Glee

Haha yo! Thats awesome. Certainly felt like the right method of listening at the time.

Fun listen. I like how they fully embrace the rock format with just guitars, bass, and drums for many of the best songs. When it comes to fusion guitarists, John McLaughlin is kind of my go-to guy, but I always appreciate what Coryell is up to when I listen to him.

Ice cold.
I do have a bit of a pet peeve with just a little bit of vocals in jazz, for some reason I prefer all or none, but it has a pretty minimal impact anyway.
But yeah, cool album and I can really appreciate this kind of deranged album artwork, particularly for this era and style

So I’ve been told it’s time for my pick, so here it is: When Sweet Sleep Returned by Assemble Head in Sunburst Sound.

Like so much music I love, I first found this through algorithm suggestions from something else I was listening to. Turns out this band was from San Francisco but seems to have vanished without a trace around 2013. Their last FB post was promoting a show they had opening for Earthless; I’ve scoured the interned to find out what happened to them but have never been able to find any info.

Anyways, I’ll let you guys check it out for yourselves, I don’t have an essay prepared on this or anything, lol, I just know what I like when I hear it and to my ear this album is a great one.

A bit of mystery is interesting. I did enjoy my listen and now looking forward to seeing if I can dig anything up!
Very genuine sound to this, could easily be 30 years older than it is. Funny you mention discovering it via algorithm, as this album finished before I realised and I made it through the next auto-played song (Kamni - Shiva THC) without noticing the artist had changed. Maybe thats a bad thing, but it goes to show just how much of this stuff is out there, so I’m glad to have discovered this here because otherwise I probably never would have.

Whoa, this is awesome. The best description I can muster is Hawkwind meets Crazy Horse, with a healthy dose of shoegaze blended in. Fascinating stuff!

This week’s album is: Ember Knight - Cheryl

Ember is an art rock freak scuttling around the gutters of Hollywood. They host a sort of kids’ show that features alt comedy and musical weirdos. They single-handedly crafted this rock opera about their queerness and brought together dozens of musicians to help. My friend said it reminds him of Kate Bush. It’s one of a kind.

Hey no pressure, it has generally been dwindling, probably time for a bit of a hiatus.
I typically listen to over 20 hours of music per week, pretty much only full albums and not counting radio or vinyl, and up to 50% of that is usually new to me, so I guess the club just suits me better than most others here haha.

Ugh, I guess I’m late. Need to listen to this week’s pick.

After the holidays (as in now) might be a good time to restart this

And the spreadsheet has elected we listen to it this week!

@Hukka 's choice is: Şatellites - Şatellites (2022, Anatolian, Neo-psych, Pop)

An aggregate of psychedelic inspirations mixed with the intoxicating rhythms and microtonal vibes of Turkey and neighboring countries. High danceability, lots of joy in the mix, and a tried and true aesthetic that will satisfy any and all gizzheads out there.

Basically everything that has come up in the club has been new to me including this one. Really enjoyed my first listen. It certainly reminded me of Altın Gün, but I really liked how little vocals there were.

Oh shit, this is really nice. Love the Altin Gun vibe with heavier synths. (Bits remind me of Stereolab, actually.) Nice pick!
