3RRR Performances

3RRR (or Three Triple R or Triple R) is a Melbourne based independent radio station that was very instrumental to King Gizzard’s rise to popularity. Gizzard made many appearances on the station whether it be an interview, performance, or track premiere. The station aired the (then brand new) studio version of Head On/Pill for the first time and King Gizz even recorded a T-Rex cover for one of their programs.

Early on, Gizzard did two live performances on the station that are now missing but I believe are two of the most interesting and historic performances of the band’s career. If anyone’s got anything from them I’d love to hear them and I’m sure many others would as well.

In November 2013, King Gizzard performed a full in-studio set at 3RRR and all that survives now is an incredible early performance of Head On/Pill, fully worth a listen, probably my favorite performance pre-2016. Additionally this show would feature the late Broderick Smith, Ambrose’s dad and narrator/writer of Eyes Like The Sky for his second ever performance with the band after one in Castlemaine in 2012. This is confirmed by the band and radio station’s posts around the time of the show and the photos the station posted afterwards. It’s unknown what was performed with him but it was almost certainly from Eyes Like The Sky.

Later in October 2014 the band announced that Joe and Stu would be doing an acoustic performance on air alongside an interview. This is a bit more of a personal grail given that I love acoustic gizzard, but they’ve done very few performances this way and it’d undeniably be amazing to have a proper radio recording of another one of them.

So yeah, quick infodump to spread the word of two of my personal gizzard grails. If any of you know anything about these performances or find them as interesting as I do let me know.

I was perusing 3RRR YouTube page and liked this one:

I really like live acoustic Gizz too, would love to hear that second one. Have you tried simply reaching out to RRR? Would be surprised if they didn’t have the recording.

It seems that they do have the recordings still, all behind a paywall though. Any 3RRR subscribers lurking here?

Also the acoustic performance had been floating around the discord server a while back and just recently resurfaced, should be up on YouTube soon! Now for the 2013 show!!!
