all of it
loved how loose, yet locked in the flow they seemed on 8/27 in Philly. this 75min or so in particular. they’re really crushing the new stuff, and the river is super tripped out…
Magma → Rats In The Sky → Daily Blues → Sea of Trees $$$$+
@PeteGizzard this is the thread we’re monitoring for notable versions.
Shoutout to the time Hot Wax replaced Cellophane in the mind fuzz suite in Nashville. Such fast wax!
posting a lot on here…but doing a ton of listening rn
Milwaukee Hot Water → Raw Feel is so connected $$$+
Having gone to the 3 shows at Red Rocks, my highlights were:
Night one: Bitter Boogie/Muddy Water (the jam and in-and-out between the two was excellent), Hog Calling Contest debut, The River, Dragon, and Chang’e → Extinction (euphoric jam). Of these, I’d say the Bitter Boogie/Muddy Water jam and the synth table set were the strongest candidates for Notable Versions.
Day Show (9/9): KGLW (Outro), You Can Be Your Silhouette (great, chilled out jam), the way they brought the Mirage City outro back in after Work This Time, and an unreal Hot Water jam to close the set. You Can Be Your Silhouette and Hot Water are contenders for Notable Versions.
Night Show (9/9): Motor Spirit (my fave song. Just so powerful in a live setting), Road Train (sick ending), People-Vulture–>Mr. Beat (great jam), Gilgamesh, and Float Along (heavy heavy jam section).
Overall, night 1 was almost perfect for me and the other two sets, while still good, paled in comparison.
the ‘Set’ they just finished 9/12/24 Vancouver
That funky breakdown in Set was my highlight of the show, though hypertension was pretty darn close
Philly River was so damn good
Milwaukee Gaia → Gila → Gaia
Gorge Magma
I posted this elsewhere on the tronz, but I’ve been seeing shows at the gorge since 93, seen numerous incredible things. The three things that stood out as pure insanity, peak audience- band synchronized energy: 1) Pearl Jam 1993 when they flooded down the cliff and broke the fences to crash the floor 2) Beastie Boys sabotage 1994 Lollapalooza, the entire floor of the gorge was crowd surfing I was looking down on it in complete awe 3) Phish Johnny B Goode in 1997, every person in there was writhing in fist pumping synchronized mayhem with Trey’s guitar.
Magma was like that last weekend, every person in there was ballistic jaw dropped fist pumping, absolute chaotic bliss.
Asheville FAFYL
Really special tour. Been digging into a ton of shows this past week since Gorge. Some real cream of the crop type performances for me include:
8/15/24 The Dripping Tap
pretty much all of NYC’s metal sections
8/17/24 MOTU, Am I In Heaven?
8/27/24 Hot Water, The River
8/28/24 Theia
9/3/24 Hypertension, Am I In Heaven?
All of Red Rocks day show
9/12/24 Swan Song → Set
9/14/24 The Silver Cord.
Last week I went through and listened through all The Silver Cord songs from the start of the tour and gave them ratings/notes. I would HIGHLY recommend this. Its awesome to see it evolve over the month.
When I get the chance I’m planning to make a bootleg Live Silver Cord mix to get the transitions smooth between sets, but in the meantime here’s my (re)ordered track list of, IMO, the best versions of each song:
- The Silver Cord - Gorge 9/14
- Gilgamesh - Asheville 8/30
- Swan Song - Vancouver 9/12
- Set - Vancouver 9/12
- Chang’e - RRN1 9/9
- Extinction - RR N1 9/9
- Thiea - Richmond 8/28
Vegemite at the gorge is clearly the best thing they did musically this entire tour.
That’s right! We’ve got microtonal guitars acoustic style! Who the fuck knows maybe later in the set we’ll play rattlesnake or some shit
Veg-e-MIIIITE!!!
Minnesota Am I In Heaven
I’ve not gone more than two days without listening to the Gorge performance of Magma so I’m gonna vote that. Pure magic.
