thread about Vinyl

Went to an obscure store pretty far away from me today because I was in the area. It was a warehouse run by an old couple who have been in the business for around forty years. Boxes upon boxes of old stock/sealed vinyl from the ‘70s and ‘80s. Grabbed a few things but the highlights were:

Ric Ocasek - Beatitude (sealed)

The Beatles - Hear The Beatles Tell All (sealed)

Patrick O’Hearn - Between Two Worlds (sealed)

Bill Bruford - One Of A Kind (thanks to @RattleRattleRattle for bringing this up in the listening thread a bit ago, cool album)

Recent far-out and groovy action:

Les Crane - Desiderata (dollar bin madness–this one is a trip!)

Eric Dolphy - Other Aspects

Elvin Jones - Poly-Currents (Tone Poet reissue)

Peter Kaukonen - Black Kangaroo

King Crimson - Red (Steve Wilson remix–not in love with it)

Nektar - A Tab In The Ocean (finally!)

Steve Reid - Odyssey Of The Oblong Square (‘22 reissue)

Michael Stanley - Friends & Legends

Sumbisori - Temporary Blessings (great Aussie soul/jazz/funk but my copy was badly marred)

Just received a copy of Nozomi Aoki’s soundtrack for Galaxy Express 999 today. Started watching the show after saying I’d jump into the Leijiverse on the What album are you listening to right now? thread and instantly liked it. Had to buy it on Discogs and have it sent from Japan but it was worth it. Has the obi and insert! I’m always shocked how thick the sleeves are for these Japanese pressings. I wish we had sleeves like that here.

A few pick-ups from this week…

Marshall Crenshaw (eponymous)

Jerry Goodman / Jan Hammer - Like Children

Kashmere Stage Band - Zero Point (reissue)

Phil Manzanera / 801 - Listen Now

Nas - Illmatic (an overdue addition)

Seiche - Demo Press (reissue)

Sun Arkestra (under the direction of Marshall Allen) - Live at Babylon

The Waitresses - Wasn’t Tomorrow Wonderful?

Denny Zeitlin (with George Marsh and Mel Graves) - The Name of This Terrain

Also rescued two albums of Bulgarian folk music from the dollar bin. Beautiful stuff!

Hadn’t heard of Seiche before – was intrigued by the name and looked them up. They’ve got quite the obscure backstory! Gave it a listen as well and enjoyed it. Thanks!

Yeah, it’s a nutty tale. Something like only 50 copies of the album originally pressed. Super obscure. Found my copy of the reissue used and took a chance on it. Not disappointed at all! Some downright evil playing.

RSD ‘26, the list is out! https://recordstoreday.com/NewsItem/11535

I need to sift back through it all, but one that really stuck out to me is Sonic Youth - Diamond Seas. It’s a disc of John Oswald applying his pluderphonics technique to live versions of “Diamond Sea.” Sounds very much up my alley.

Cool little Gizz boot in there as well. Probably not on my buy list, but cool to see nonetheless.

This might be my favorite RSD list yet. So much to go over.

  • Pink Floyd’s 1975 Los Angeles show has me the most excited. I wasn’t going to buy the WYWH box set to get it but I will absolutely grab either the vinyl or CD.
  • The XTC live album sounds awesome. Same with the John Prine BBC Sessions.
  • Billy Strings Tiny Desk show!
  • Wonder what the sound quality of the King Crimson 1974 show is. I’ve heard some recordings up on DGM and they’re brutal. That’s an RSD First release too so I’m not too concerned about missing it.
  • Shocked that the Gil-Scott Heron and Masayoshi Takanaka reissues are exclusives and not RSD First releases.
Half speed master of Gong’s Flying Teapot is brilliant but its regional so I have no clue if I’m ever going to find it.
  • I’m getting a little tired of the early Talking Heads archival material. Might go for it but I don’t know.
  • I never ended up seeing the King Gizz release last year but I might grab this new one it if I see it in April.

Aw man, didn’t realize that Gong album is “regional.” Definitely on my list. Here’s hoping they mean the Midwest!

The remastered and expanded Cream Live looks tempting. Of course the Grateful Dead and Jazz Dispensary comp look good too but I’ll have to dive into this massive list later before I make my Want List.

Had one of those “pinch-me-I’m-dreaming” experiences yesterday. Went to a local thrift store that does dollar records. I’ve found good stuff there in the past but it’s always one or two at a time, with weeks or months of finding nothing decent in between.

This time I guess I lined it up just right because I walked away with 27 VG/VG+ titles by Kingfish (yep, with Bob Weir!), John Hartford, John Prine, The Crusaders, John Hiatt, Mississippi John Hurt, Pat Metheny, James Taylor, Carole King, Chick Corea / Return to Forever, Joe Farrell, Lou Reed, Jimmy Reed, McCoy Tyner, John Mayall, and some other things that I grabbed just to check out. 27 records for just under $27 with tax (the clerk got frustrated counting and said “let’s call it 25” lol). A score to remember!

Anyone else hitting the bins this weekend?
