I was a huge RHCP fan in middle school, and grew up with the parents playing Dylan my while childhood. I was probably a month or so into The Uplift Mofo Party Plan before I realized Subterranean Homesick Blues was THAT Subterranean Homesick Blues. At that age I knew the song but not the title, and it was so different it never clicked until I was reading the lyrics.
I’ve liked Bob Dylan most of my life, but I only really got to know his music a few years ago.
Favourite albums:
- Blood On The Tracks (1975)
- Highway 61 Revisited (1965)
- Blonde On Blonde (1966)
- Bringing It All Back Home (1965)
- Desire (1976)
I do also love the Freewheelin’ and Time Out of Mind.
Favourite Songs:
- Positively 4th Street (Single, 1965) (Such an underrated song, one of my all-time favourites)
- Lily, Rosemary & the Jack of Hearts (Blood On the Tracks, 1975) (Also criminally underrated)
- Like A Rolling Stone (Highway 61 Revisited, 1965)
- Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blues (Highway 61 Revisited, 1965)
- Tangled Up In Blue (Blood On the Tracks, 1975)
- Queen Jane Approximately (Highway 61 Revisited, 1965)
- Visions of Johanna (Blonde on Blonde, 1966)
- Subterranean Homesick Blues (Bringing It All Back Home, 1965)
- Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right (The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan, 1963)
- Isis (Desire, 1976)
I’d say you did pretty well. It’s all down to personal taste, so there is no right or wrong list. Somewhere out there is even a man or woman who counts 1973’s “Dylan” as their favourite Bob Dylan album.
I do have one question, though: “Visions of Johanna” seemed conspicuous by its absence. Have you no love for that song?
I can relate to your feelings about “Desire”. I was always a little lukewarm towards that album until I watched the remastered Rolling Thunder Revue film when it came out. Those incendiary live performances drove me back to the album with new appreciation for the songs.
