PHANTOM ISLAND!

Amazing

What a masterpiece.

the album is sooooo incredible. only listened once so far. i’m in love. silent spirit, aerodynamic, eternal return, lonely cosmos are my main standouts, but every song is amazing. so many candid moments, especially spacesick. panpsych and sea of doubt are growing on me very quickly. an amazingly unique and powerful release.

Damn I guess I just have different opinions to you guys…have only listened twice but so far I only like Grow Wings And Fly and the title track…mostly I just think they don’t suit the genre very well, but I respect everyone’s opinions. I’ll have to listen again and see if I change my mind.

I had wanted to wait for my vinyl copy to turn up but I gave it a listen during work earlier anyway. Great stuff. I’m so incredibly hyped for the orchestra shows later in the year…

Haven’t read this thread yet but OH MY GOD THIS ALBUM!!!

Aerodynamic just blew my mind

On first listen I liked the album a good deal but do feel it needs a lot more time to digest and grow. However, I will say I was a bit disappointed that there’s no other tracks that hit quite like the title track opener, but it’s no deal breaker. There’s good stuff throughout that I imagine will only get stronger with time for me.

b741 didn’t click at all other than Sad Pilot on my first listen and now it’s become one of my most listened to albums of the last two years sooo

I’m guessing it will grow on you like B741 did. It has a similar shaggy dog flow that is sorta overwhelming and takes a bit of time to parse out. I’m loving it. Perfect follow up companion to my favorite album of this decade.

I’m loving the beautiful weirdness of this record. Eternal Return is a super fun romp.

I think these songs will be able to evolve live without the orchestra. Some creative keyboard work would go a long way. There are some excellent solo Sax parts, don’t know if that is Amby? As pointed out before Amby has some of the most satisfying vocal parts on here. There are a couple parts where I’m not sure who is singing. theres a fun part in (I think) Silent Spirit that IDK who it is.

Lots of maturity on display with the songwriting here. A lot of bravery too.

Aerodynamic is an obvious highlight. They could have a hit with this one.

I’m just so happy about this.

Yeah I don’t doubt it either, I think it’s one of those first listens where if you had any specific ideas of what it’d be ahead of time, it will be a challenging first listen to get passed those thoughts/feelings.

But I will say, Aerodynamic was an instant hit for me. So good. Same with all of the singles.

I listened to the first two singles so much I burned out on Deadstick a bit. I like listening to the album by skipping that one…or even by starting on track three.

Okay yeah this second full listen is really doin’ it for me. It’s clicking into place. This rules.

Some of their best compositions, Zappa-esque

Very beautiful album. Silent Spirit and Lonely Cosmos have been my favorites. So deeply personal. It’s honestly a lot. Spacesick is such a gut punch and that final Stu verse in Silent Spirit hits like a truck. Have to say that Eternal Return is taking a bit to grow on me but its a good tune.

Side note: I hate the vinyl sleeve. It’s so hard to get into/out of the cardboard one. Like its just a bit too big because of the rubbery texture it has. I’ve accidentally torn the sleeve trying to get it out.

Halfway through Panpsych
I have sooo much to say :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Do you guys have theories about the storyline of the album already? Flight B741 was pretty straightforward but this one is a bit all over the place, with the general theme being journeys (gizzverse-wise at least, the real life theme being touring and relationship with the family in this oddlife). For me the stories echoing each other would be:

  • the flight B741 crashing, with its passengers having a spiritual experience opening them to the pan psych (which is a feel already expressed in Gaia and in Han-Tyumi songs, but only after he starts vomiting). This corresponds to deadstick and pan psych

  • a lonely astronaut missing his family. It seems that this is the character from Kepler-22 b, and the fact that he’s lonely seems to make him a separate character from the rebels of Rat’s nest and the rainbow pilgrims in the Invisible face video. This corresponds to Lonely cosmos and Spacesick.

  • I’d say that Phantom island, Aerodynamic and Sea of doubts are about the same characters, reaching the Phantom island which is one of those places people get obsessed with after visiting the bardo/dreamworld and living an anamnesis. However it’s the first time that we see characters reach one of those places, and things go wrong and they have to retreat back to sea. After that, they suffer from a ā€œland born curseā€, the land in question being the Phantom island and share their wish to be able to fly with Chang’e, a goddess generally presented as see as protector by humans in the Gizzverse. Then their boat sunk and end up on rafts. This could be part of the journey of the pilgrims to Polygondwanaland, after all they navigate on a vast sea and visit the bardo/dreamworld in the Castle in the air, so it makes sense that they chase the Phantom island. The other possibility is that it is part of the journey of Han-Tyumi and this is how he ended of the raft fishing for fishies, but my impression is that he visited the bardo when he goes underwater in the FFF video, which would contradict him visiting the Phantom island before this.

  • I see Eternal return, Silent spirit and Grow wings and fly as just songs that speak about the general themes of the album and real life.

  • finally, I think the Grow wings and fly video represents the moment Han-Tyumi decides he no longer want to fish, and if later he will want to turn people into cyborgs it will be to erase their need to eat and exploit animals. In the video, he fishes a fish which has the same face as himself (as they’re both Amby), which represents his realization that animals and humans are the same. Also, force ghost Stu echoes both Amby’s loss of his dad and Han-Tyumi dead family.

This has been my Gizzverse rumbling, I don’t know when I will have time to write my full idea of the gizzverse I was already talking about that the silver cord came out lol but I’m curious about other people’s interpretations of this album.

You should write a blog post on this for our site

i’m a fan. GWAF (especially Joey and Amby’s verses) remains my favorite and Deadstick remains my least favorite. probably gonna need to listen to the meat in that sandwich for a week or so before I can come up with any real opinions about the rest of the tracks. listening to it twice thru in the prep kitchen this afternoon didn’t make for a listening experience where the nuances could be appreciated!

This is too chaotic in its present form and it would take a lot of time to make this clean while I have a lot of stuff to write for work already so I guess it will just stay a rambling on the forum ahah. Speaking of the blog huge huge props to the post about anamnesis, it is a central part of how I see the Gizzverse and it makes me want to go read more Philip K Dick as I totally missed the spiritual aspect of his books when I was in middle school/early high school.

In Silent Spirit, if you mean the high falsetto ā€œtime is pregnantā€¦ā€ verse, that’s Joey

Hey dude! I wrote the Anamnesis essay; I’m glad you enjoyed it! I love your theories on Phantom Island, and think they’re worth writing out in detail!
